Fuelling during a race

For those training for any endurance event, you will know the important of fuelling during your longs runs. We interviewed Sally Anderson an experienced Advanced Sports Dietitian and Exercise Physiology last yeah who gave us some great advice about fuelling during training.

The bigger question is what happens on race day? If you've done any reading online you will definitely have heard the saying "nothing new on race day". The reason behind this is because you never know if it is going to work for you. When you've trainined so hard you don't want mess things up by wearing brand new shoes and getting blisters or a new top that you didn't predict was going to cause chafing. Or consume an electrolyte that makes you get the runs!

So my biggest tip for those that are getting into the hype of running marathons is train with the electrolyte that will be on the course. It will help you and your gut get used to it but then also know if you may need may need to carry your own gels/chews if you don't like the ones on offer.

If you are lucky, some Australian marathons will allow you to bring your own drinks and be placed on a table. Just make sure you check your event and how often they allow this as sometimes it may mean that you have less opportunities though for an electrolyte.

I've compiled a quick list of upcoming marathons and what their nutrition is during the race to help you out. However, read the race guide! Be familiar with when the water stations are. This can help train in a similar way to race day - practice makes it seemless on race day.
